The Harris School Goes Wireless

With the creation of the Harris School Information Technology (HSIT) group, the Harris School has been able to expand its technical and computing capabilities—including adding wireless access throughout the School. An in-house technology resource for all students, faculty, and staff, HSIT seeks to address the Harris School’s need for a stable technology infrastructure as it continues to grow.

Currently, we are involved in a number of projects – from updating and standardizing the desktop platform to installing a new suite of backend servers and products. We have implemented a new server network with many new features for to students, faculty, and staff as well as two Harris School Intranets—one for faculty/staff and one for students. These allow faculty, staff, and students to access their personal directories and provide centralized sources for needed information. During the Spring, we will be installing a high end research computing system as well as upgrading the student computing labs.

In addition to continuing to offer classes on various software programs, we now have training sessions that introduce new features, give security tips, and provide practical demonstrations on both the systems now in place and other topics of interest.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we have established a main contact for faculty, staff, and students to contact us for any technology questions or concerns (hsit@listhost.uchicago.edu or 773-702-6088).
