Speaker Bios
 

Ashish Bose

Professor Bose is easily the most well-known demographer in India. The term he coined to refer to the backwardness of some of the north India states-BIMARU-has crossed disciplinary boundaries and is widely used in policy circles and the media. For many years he has been a regular invitee at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie-India's premier research and training institute on administration and public policy. His lectures on population issues have influenced many policymakers and program managers. He writes regular columns which appear in the Economic and Political Weekly and in national newspapers, and which are read widely. He is one of two demographers in India's 40-member National Commission on Population headed by the prime minister. Professor Bose spent most of his academic career at the Institute of Economic Growth, New Delhi, where he is currently an honorary professor. He is also a distinguished professor at the Institute for Integrated Learning in Management (IILM), New Delhi. He has written and edited over 25 books on population and development and published several research papers in books and journals. He was awarded the prestigious Jawahar Lal Nehru Fellowship in 1990. He was elected president of the Indian Association for the Study of Population (IASP) for three terms, and it was under his leadership that the New Delhi Conference of International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) was held in 1989. The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, was privileged to have him as United Nations Resource Person in 1995.

Gurcharan Das

An Indian author, consultant, and public intellectual, Mr. Das is a columnist for The Times of India and other newspapers. Currently, he is a venture capitalist and a consultant to industry and the Indian government. Mr. Das graduated with honors from Harvard University in philosophy and politics. He later attended Harvard Business School (AMP), where he is featured in three case studies. Mr. Das was the CEO of Procter & Gamble India and vice president for Procter & Gamble Far East. He was later vice president and managing director for Procter & Gamble Worldwide. Prior to P&G, he was chairman and managing director of Richardson Hindustan Limited from 1981 to 1985, the company where he started as a trainee. In 1995, after a 30-year career in 6 countries, he took an early retirement to become a full-time writer. He writes a regular column on Sundays for the Times of India and Dainik Bhaskar and occasional guest columns for the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and Time magazine. His recent books include India Unbound and The Elephant Paradigm. India Unbound has been published in many countries and languages and has been filmed by the BBC. His novel A Fine Family is being adapted for television. His plays have been performed in many cities in India as well as Off Broadway in New York.

Yogendra Kumar Modi

Mr. Modi is chairman of YKM Holdings International Limited. The company holds a range of investments on behalf of the Modi family, a leading Indian family with a variety of mainly industrial assets. Investments by the family include a significant holding in Great Eastern Energy Corporation Limited (GEECL), an Indian-based company that listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2005. GEECL is involved in the exploration, development, and production of Coal Bed Methane (CBM) gas in the Raniganj Coalfields in West Bengal, India. Mr. Modi is the former president of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. He is also the chairman of Modi Telecommunications, a radio paging service firm. He previously headed the banking and finance committee-All India Alkali Manufacturers Association and Indian Paging Service Association-of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).


David C. Mulford

U.S. Ambassador to India since January 2004, Ambassador Mulford earned his bachelor's degree from Lawrence University, his master's degree from Boston University, and his Ph.D. from Oxford University. Prior to becoming Ambassador to India, he was chairman international and member of the Executive Board for Credit Suisse First Boston in London, England, where he previously held the position of chairman and chief executive officer (Europe). From 1984 to 1992, he served as assistant secretary for international affairs and, eventually, as undersecretary for international affairs for the Department of the Treasury. Ambassador Mulford has also served as managing director and head of international finance at White, Weld & Co., Inc., and a senior investment advisor to the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency.


Elizabeth Sime

CARE regional director, Ms. Sime has extensive experience in combating poverty and displacement. Before becoming regional director for CARE India, Sime was the country director for CARE West Bank and Gaza, field representative for CARE Australia, team leader and country director for CARE Eritrea, and ACD program support for CARE Kosovo.
