Mr. Edward Gilbert joined Shinsei Bank, International Principal Finance in June 2003 as its General Manager, based in Tokyo. Responsibilities included business development in Greater China and structuring and negotiating of strategic acquisitions of financial institutions, real property assets and non-performing loan portfolios throughout the world.

Mr. Gilbert was promoted to the Principal Transactions Sub-Group in May 2007 as its General Manager. His responsibilities include structuring, negotiating and supervising strategic and portfolio investments made by Shinsei Bank outside of Japan, including Germany, India, China, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan and the United States. Recently this responsibility has been extended to also include managing workout and restructuring of Shinsei Bank investments in Asia, Europe and the United States as the senior legal and restructuring officer in the institutional bank.

Among his responsibilities at Shinsei include his roles as Director of Jih Sun Financial Holding, Co., Ltd. (a Taiwan listed financial services company); Observer to board of Duff & Phelps (a NYSE listed company); and lead director to Specialized Loan Servicing, a Delaware LLC as well as director of several other portfolio companies.

Prior to joining Shinsei Bank, Mr. Gilbert was the Director of Global Principal Investments for Merrill Lynch, as Head, Greater China, active in both Taiwan and China businesses, with a mandate to invest in opportunistic, stressed, and distressed situations.

Prior to joining Merrill Lynch, Mr. Gilbert was the Managing Director of Lone Star Asia-Pacific Investments, Ltd. His responsibilities included deal origination and structuring and negotiation of transactions in Taiwan, China and South East Asian countries.

Prior to joining Lone Star, Mr. Gilbert was a partner with the law firm of Vinson & Elkins in Singapore. His practice focused on corporate acquisitions, the development and the financing of major projects and corporate restructurings. Mr. Gilbert started his practice of law with Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York. He has also worked with Shearman & Sterling in Hong Kong and New York and Perkins Coie in Portland, Oregon.

Mr. Gilbert was the Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore from 1999 to 2001. He is a past President of the International Section of the Oregon Bar Association. He has lectured and written extensively concerning foreign investment, restructuring and financings in Asia.

 

Education

He is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, JD (1981), where he was an Associate Editor of the University of Chicago Law Review. He has also received a Masters Degree in Public Policy and Finance (1979) from the University of Chicago. He received a Masters Degree in Economics and a BA in English “with distinction” (1977) from The Ohio State University, where he was an “Outstanding Senior” and President of Sphinx, the Senior Honorary.
