Don Coursey to Speak at Symposium on Conservation Issues
Don Coursey, the Ameritech Professor in the Harris School, will participate in a panel discussion on October 25 on "Making Economic Growth Sustainable," examining the importance of everyday economics in conservation.
Presented by The Nature Conservancy and the University of Chicago's Graham School of General Studies, this discussion is part of a three-part lecture series addressing critical conservation issues and solutions.
The October 25 panel will describe how market mechanisms can be used to protect the world's land and water, will consider how economists assign a value to environmental resources, and will address why habitat preservation is a wise investment for the future.
In addition to Coursey, who will chair the panel, speakers include:
- Gretchen Daily, professor of biological sciences, Stanford University; director, Center for Conservation Biology; senior fellow, Woods Institute for the Environment; chair, The Natural Capital Project
- V. Kerry Smith, W.P. Carey Professor of Economics, W.P. Carey School of Business, Arizona State University
- David Brookshire, professor of economics; director of Science Impact Laboratory for Policy and Economics, University of New Mexico
Held at the Gleacher Center, the lecture series is one of several events in 2007 celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Nature Conservancy in Illinois. Event details.
