William Howell and Jon Pevehouse Awarded the D.B. Hardeman Prize
William Howell and Jon Pevehouse, associate professors in the Harris School, have been honored with the D.B. Hardeman Prize for their book, While Dangers Gather: Congressional Checks on Presidential War Powers (Princeton University Press, 2007). Awarded by the Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation, the prize is given to the author of the "most important book on a congressional topic."
H.W. Brands, a member of the prize committee and on the faculty of University of Texas at Austin, said, "They adduce an impressive array of empirical evidence to show that while Congress rarely challenges presidents directly, its members employ the media, lobbyists, and grassroots groups to shape the context in which presidents resort to force." He also said noted the broad implications of the book for American foreign policy.
As part of the award, Howell and Pevehouse will also receive a $5,000 cash prize.
