IPP Students to Travel to Jordan and Israel
As U.S.-sponsored efforts for peace in the Middle East commence, twelve Harris School students will travel to Jordan and Israel as part of the 2007 International Policy Practicum (IPP) on "America, Jordan, and the Future of the Middle East."
Beginning as a classroom-based seminar focused on a different region each year, the IPP concludes with a trip to that region for on-the-ground interviews and first-hand experience. The students then write a briefing memo suitable for an executive or legislator.
This fall, the students learned about Jordanian history and politics, discussed current challenges in the Middle East and the historical regional involvement of the United States, and explored areas in which U.S.-Jordanian cooperation could improve the prospects for regional peace and prosperity.
Starting on December 3, the students will travel for twelve days with the faculty leader-Charles Wheelan-to meet with a wide range of local and regional experts and practitioners. Speakers include U.S. Embassy officers, refugee camp volunteers, editors and journalists from the Al-Ghad Newspaper and MediaArabia, the headmaster of a co-ed private boarding school, former prime ministers, heads of private organizations from business consulting to pharmaceuticals to development companies, students and faculty from universities and think tanks, filmmakers, and social activists, among others.
