Ricardo Paes de Barros Named Tinker Visiting Professor
Ricardo Paes de Barros has been awarded a Tinker Visiting Professorship in Latin American and Iberian Studies for Winter Quarter 2008 at the Harris School.
An expert on issues of poverty, Paes de Barros received his PhD in economics from the University of Chicago in 1987 and is currently a researcher and the coordinator for the evaluation of public policies at the Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada (IPEA), which produces economic research for the Brazilian government. He has also served as an assistant professor at Yale University.
Paes de Barros will be teaching the course, "Poverty, Inequality, and Social Policy in Latin America," which will also be offered through the University's Center on Latin American Studies. Additionally, Paes de Barros will give a lecture on his research on poverty and inequality during the quarter.
Since 1981, the Edward Larocque Tinker Visiting Professorship has provided prominent scholars and professionals the opportunity to take up academic residence at the University of Chicago for the purposes of teaching, conducting research, and interacting with faculty and students at the University and in the region.
