Tomas Philipson Named Daniel Levin Professor in Public Policy Studies

The Harris School has named Professor Tomas Philipson the first Daniel Levin Professor in Public Policy Studies. Created in 2005, the professorship honors long-time Harris School supporter Daniel Levin, founder and chairman of The Habitat Company.

Philipson-a member of the Harris School faculty since 1998-focuses his research on health economics, including most recently on the value of life and terminal care. He has received numerous international and national research awards, including the highest honor of his field, the Kenneth Arrow Award of the International Health Economics Association (in 2000 and 2006). In addition, he was awarded the Garfield Award by Research!America in 2007 for his work on the value of HIV/AIDS drugs and the Distinguished Economic Research Award from the Milken Institute in 2003.

"This professorship recognizes Tomas' impressive research contributions," said Susan E. Mayer, dean of the Harris School. "He brings the very highest academic skills to bear on important policy issues facing the nation, and his skill and dedication are highly respected."

In addition to his role at The Habitat Company, Levin is a member of the Harris School's Visiting Committee and Dean's International Council as well as participant in the School's Mentor Program. From 2001 to 2005, he funded the Levin Faculty Fellowship, which was awarded annually to a faculty member working on urban issues.
