Global Opportunities
The Harris School believes that the training students gain in the classroom and the field is further enhanced by exposure to viewpoints from around the globe. This includes internships and international practica, partnerships with international institutions, world-renowned speakers addressing students, and the Dean's International Council.
Applied Learning
The Harris School believes that students should have opportunities to practice the skills they have
learned in the classroom. The programs are facilitated by the Center for Policy Practice.
- Group Internships - enable students to apply their skills to policy-related projects and to work in a team environment. To date, students have worked in Chile, Mexico, and Brazil. Learn more >>
- International Policy Practica - In seminar-style practica courses, select second-year students study an international policy issue and, at the conclusion of the quarter, take a faculty-led trip to the specific region or country studied. Learn more >>
International Partnerships
The Harris School has partnered with a number of international institutions to create exchanges for students, executives, faculty, and research.
- Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), Instituto de Desenvolvimento Educacional: providing Brazilian MBA students with a week-long capstone experience in Chicago dedicated to studying a specific policy topic. Read more >>
- Geary Institute, University College Dublin: collaborating on training opportunities for Irish policy professionals and on research addressing critical social and economic issues in both Europe and the United States
- Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris, France: research workshop exchanges for PhD students and faculty
- Tel Aviv University: periodic mini-course series exchange on a variety of topics, including education policy (2005), globalization (2006), poverty and inequality (2007), and civic society (2008)
- Universidad de Chile: a collaborative dual degree program in which participating students may graduate from both institutions with two master's degrees in public policy studies. Also available: a diploma program for Chilean students offered by Harris School faculty via teleconferencing. Learn more >>
- Universidad de Iberoamericana: taught by Harris School and Ibero faculty, students receive a diploma in social policy. Students are generally federal and state representatives, political party officials, NGO staff, and middle to high level public officials from state and local governments.
- Yonsei University: a collaborative dual degree program in which participating students may graduate with a master’s degree from the Harris School and a master’s in International Studies from Yonsei University Graduate School of International Studies. Learn more >>
Visiting Lecturers and Speakers
The Harris School provides students with a unique global perspective by inviting international policy experts and political leaders to give policy addresses and share their experiences. Visiting lecturers teach course on a variety of policy topics, sharing their unique perspective and experience with students. Ranging from respected academics to heads of state, speakers give policy addresses to students, the university community, as well as members of the policymaking and business communities. Speakers range from respected academics to heads of state.
Dean's International Council
One of the Harris School's two advisory groups, the Dean's International Council is charged with expanding the School's global reach by identifying international opportunities and networks that position the School as the leader in public policy training and research. Learn more >>
