Biographical Overview
I am a fifth year doctoral student at the Harris School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago and a Research Analyst at the National Opinion Research Center. I received my MA in Nonprofit Arts Management at American University. Previously, I worked as a Research Associate at the Urban Institute in the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy, and as an administrator in several arts nonprofits including the Arts and Business Council of Chicago and Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs. I also do freelance nonprofit consulting work for WolfBrown and Slover Linett Consulting.
My research focuses on using quantitative methods to evaluate and improve the management of nonprofit institutions. In my job market paper, I develop and test an economic model that explains the rationale behind investing into major capital projects. Using the model, I identify reasons for why nonprofit cultural organizations encountered sustainability issues after investing into capital projects in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I conclude that investment into the supply of cultural facilities exceeded demand for facilities in cities across the U.S. Because supply exceeded demand, cultural organizations experienced financial hardships that weakened organizational structures and the cultural sector as a whole. I am working on a book on capital investment in culture and the arts set to be published by the University of Chicago Press in 2013.
I am currently on the academic job market (2011-12 academic year) and will be presenting and interviewing at the APPAM fall conference in Washington, D.C. and interviewing at the AEA winter conference in Chicago. You may contact me directly at jworonkowicz@uchicago.edu or through the Harris School’s graduate student coordinator, Cynthia Cook-Conley (c-cook@uchicago.edu) to schedule an interview. My advisors are Norman Bradburn, Robert Gertner, Dan Black, and Colm O’Muircheartaigh. My current curriculum vitae and job market paper are available for download.
