PhD Student

Biographical Overview

I am a fifth year doctoral student at the Harris School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago and an Institute of Education Sciences Pre-Doctoral Fellow with the University of Chicago Committee on Education. I received my BA with high distinction in Economics and Sociology from the University of Virginia and a Masters in Public Affairs from the Robert M. La Follette School of Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Previously, I have been an investment banker and a New York City Teaching Fellow, teaching 5th grade in a low-income New York City community. During my tenure as a teacher, I completed an MSEd. with graduation honors in elementary education from the City College of New York and founded a non-profit tutoring company which provided individualized tutoring services to low-income students.

My research centers on issues of urban education policy. My dissertation, “Essays on Urban School Organization: Evidence from Chicago Public Schools,” explores how the political economy of schooling as well as a school’s social-organizational structure – the internal life of schools – impact school climate, student and teacher safety, and student academic and behavioral outcomes. My research is grounded in rigorous empirical and econometric methods while simultaneously focused on informing urban education policymakers and practitioners on the role of school organization in shaping a variety of policy-relevant schooling outcomes. As such, my work has a cross-disciplinary scope and benefits from collaboration with education researchers, policymakers and practitioners. Indeed, as a former elementary school teacher, my research – both in scope and its intended audience – is informed by my classroom experience in New York City. My work has also explored the manner in which adolescents allocate their out-of-school time and issues of access in higher education.

I am currently on the academic job market (2011-12 academic year) and will be interviewing at the APPAM fall conference and the AERA spring conference. You may contact me directly at msteinberg@uchicago.edu or through the Harris School’s graduate student coordinator, Cynthia Cook-Conley (c-cook@uchicago.edu) to schedule an interview. My advisors are Kerwin Charles, Stephen Raudenbush and Ofer Malamud. My current curriculum vitae and research papers are available for download.
