Health Services Research Training Program (NRSA)

This program is intended to support students already accepted to a University of Chicago Ph.D. program.

The Health Services Research Training Program is appropriate for pre-doctoral trainees in health services research.

This AHRQ-funded program incorporates interdisciplinary training through collaborative efforts in Health Economics, Health Studies, Medical Sociology, Organizational Behavior and Health, Psychology, Public Policy in Health, and Social Service Administration. While graduate students from any discipline are welcome to apply, students should desire to pursue academic careers in health services research or related fields. This training program is intended to support students from thesis development through the later stages of their thesis. Applicants should be entering their third year (or later) of their PhD program by the Fall Quarter of 2006.

The fellowships are for the period of one year with a possibility of renewal. Trainees must have United States citizenship or be a US permanent resident. Fellowships pay a stipend of at least $20,772, tuition (as determined by the division), fees, and a modest travel stipend to cover the expense of the annual NRSA meeting. Further details on the program and its requirements are available from Prof. Willard Manning at w-manning@uchicago.edu or by phone at 773-702-2067.

Applications are accepted from March 1 through April 15 and should consist of:

  1. A sealed official transcript from the University of Chicago.
  2. A statement of research goals.
  3. A synopsis of a thesis proposal, if possible. If in the process of choosing a thesis topic, please explain where you are in the process.
  4. A statement of how much required coursework remains, and when these courses are scheduled to be completed.
  5. A list of exams yet to be taken. At least two letters from faculty who have worked or are working in health services research or related disciplinary and substantive fields.
  6. A current CV.
