The Community Economic Development Organization (C.E.D.O.) is a student organization aimed at promoting community awareness, fostering sustainability, and improving the quality of life in underserved neighborhoods. During 2002-2003, the group sponsored forums on the conditions facing Chicago Housing Authority tenants and Chicago’s affordable housing crisis. In addition, C.E.D.O., the Human Relations Foundation of Chicago, and the African American Student Association at the School of Social Service

Administration hosted the annual Chicago Dinner to cultivate dialogue around issues of race and diversity in Chicago. Future plans include a longterm research project with the Partnership for a South Side Community Development Credit Union to measure its positive effects on the surrounding community. Minorities in Public Policy Studies (MIPPS) has had a busy year, increasing its visibility at the Harris School, around the University, and in the community. At their annual alumni dinner in May, they will present the first Alumni Award to one of the founding members, Danilo Cuevas (M.P.P. ’01), who is now a staff analyst with the Chicago Transit Authority. The many events sponsored by MIPPS include faculty-student breakfasts, a public lecture series, and a human rights brown bag discussion series for students. MIPPS is also partnering with C.E.D.O. to host a conference with the Chicago Rehab Network, as well as developing a more solid internal infrastructure and strategic plan.

Out in Public (Policy) (OIPP) is a new student organization that examines policy issues relevant to different sexual orientations. Formed during Fall Quarter 2002, the group’s purpose is to create the opportunities for discussion among its members and the larger community, as well as to serve as a social and academic resource for students. OIPP has participated in social events with professional schools across campus and from Northwestern University, and has connected members to other events. OIPP will continue to develop its presence and programs during Spring Quarter 2003 and in the future.

The Public Policy Students Association (PPSA) recently held its Fourth Annual Harris School Auction, with Professor Don Coursey again serving as the auctioneer. This year, the auction was dedicated to the memory of Amy Bosman, who attended the Harris School. PPSA also continues to be a liaison for Harris School students to the administration and to the University Student Government Association’s Graduate Council. In addition, PPSA organized weekly cocktail parties for faculty, staff, and students; a clothing drive; and a toy drive.
