Privatization: An Essential Element to U.S. Economic Renewal

As the economic crisis that plagues our country and our states continues, one should be aware of a rarely-heard quote from John F. Kennedy, “The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word ‘crisis’. One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger-but recognize the opportunity”. Over the next few years the United States and its individual states will be facing the greatest budgetary and entitlement deficits along with the greatest infrastructure crisis they have ever seen. How these governments navigate these issues will dictate their future success for years to come, as they are really dealing with the question, “what is the role of modern government and what businesses should it be in?”. Privatization presents itself as one of the tools in answering this question and challenging the problems of economic revival that have plagued state and local governments over the past generation. Those who are able to utilize it well in this generation will succeed in the next one.
