Funding Opportunities
Faculty Development Awards
This award supports promising faculty members in the early years of their careers who are
engaged in innovative research on achievement, health and well-being across the lifespan. This award provides support for research
assistance, data acquisition, travel, or for salary support.
2008-09 Award Recipients:
- Professor Ofer Malamud, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies
- Professor Ioana Marinescu, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, for her research on the causes and consequences of job mobility.
Research Incubator Award
This award will provide funds to a group of at least two people who are interested in developing a research proposal for funding. The purpose of the award is to help “jump start” a grant proposal. Such an award could allow the team to hire a student to conduct a review of the literature or preliminary data analysis, invite a consultant for a day to brainstorm about ideas, or perhaps hold a one day retreat for the research group.
2007-08 Award Recipients:
- Professor Tomas Philipson, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, for his book project with Anupam B. Jena, entitled Health and Economic Inequality in the United States.
- Professor Judith Levine, School of Social Service Administration, for her book project entitled, Reaching for the Bottom Rung: Low-Income Women’s Climb into the Labor Market before and after Welfare Reform.
X-Prize for Innovative Research on Human Potential
Modeled on the X Prize Foundation’s award of the same name, which seeks to “capture the imagination of the public and speed radical breakthroughs that can ultimately change the way we see ourselves and how we live on this planet,” the Center offers a $500 award to spark innovation in human potential research or to reward an imaginative idea for bringing human potential research and policy together.
Human Potential Conference Award
This award will provide $8,000 to faculty scholars organizing a conference related to one of the Center’s program areas.
2007-08 Award Recipient: Professor Robert Michael to help support the NLSY97 Tenth Anniversary Conference. View the conference agenda & papers.
Post-Doctoral Fellowship “Topping Off” Awards

Graduate Student Travel Awards
This award will provide up to four students a year with $500 to help support their attendance at an academic conference at which they are presenting research. View the application instructions (PDF).
2007-08 Award Recipients: Harris School doctoral students Patrick Wightman and April Wu who will present at the Population Association of America Conference, and psychology doctoral student Kalina Michalska who will present at the Cognitive Neuroscience Society Meeting.
