Faculty Development Awards

This award supports promising faculty members in the early years of their careers who are engaged in innovative research on achievement, health and well-being across the lifespan. This award provides support for research assistance, data acquisition, travel, or for salary support.

2008-09 Award Recipients:

  • Professor Ofer Malamud, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, for his research on the effect of home computer use on child outcomes.
  • Professor Ioana Marinescu, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, for her research on the causes and consequences of job mobility.

Research Incubator Award

This award will provide funds to a group of at least two people who are interested in developing a research proposal for funding. The purpose of the award is to help "jump start" a grant proposal. Such an award could allow the team to hire a student to conduct a review of the literature or preliminary data analysis, invite a consultant for a day to brainstorm about ideas, or perhaps hold a one day retreat for the research group.

2007-08 Award Recipients:

  • Professor Tomas Philipson, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, for his book project with Anupam B. Jena, entitled Health and Economic Inequality in the United States.
  • Professor Judith Levine, School of Social Service Administration, for her book project entitled, Reaching for the Bottom Rung: Low-Income Women's Climb into the Labor Market before and after Welfare Reform.

Human Potential Conference Award

This award will provide $8,000 to faculty scholars organizing a conference related to one of the Center's program areas.

2007-08 Award Recipient: Professor Robert Michael to help support the NLSY97 Tenth Anniversary Conference.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship "Topping Off" Awards

This award will be offered to faculty to supplement the salary of, or provide benefits for, a current or incoming post-doctoral student whose research supports the Center's mission. Depending on availability, the award will range between $10,000 and $15,000.

Graduate Student Travel Awards

The Center will award up to two, $500 awards each quarter. The award must be used for travel to a conference during the quarter in which it is awarded. View the application instructions (PDF).

2009-10 Award Recipients:

  • April Yanyuan Wu, Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies will present “Why Do So Few Elderly Take up Food Stamps?” at the Association for Public Policy and Management conference.
  • Olena Verbenko, Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies will present “Strategic Corporate Philanthropy” at the Ronald Coase Institute Workshop on Institutional Studies in Xiamen, China.

2008-09 Award Recipients:

  • Haeil Jung, Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, presented "The Effects of Time in Prison on Male Ex-Prisoners' Employment and Earnings" at the Association for Public Policy and Management conference.
  • April Yanyuan Wu, Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, presented "Older Women's Economic Well-Being: Income, Consumption, and Leisure Before and After Retirement" at the Association for Public Policy and Management conference.
  • Jen-Hao Chen, Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, presented "Early Origins of Noncognitive Abilities" at the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association.
  • Patrick Wightman, Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, presented "Parental Job Loss and Children’s Educational Attainment" at the Society for Research in Child Development Biennial Meeting.

2007-08 Award Recipients:

  • Patrick Wightman, Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, presented "Parental job loss and children's college attendance in black and white middle-class families" at the Population Association of America conference.
  • April Yanyuan Wu, Doctoral Student, The Harris School of Public Policy Studies, presented "Linking Social Security Retirement Benefits to Marital Status: Income and Consumption During Retirement" at the Population Association of America conference.
  • Kalina Michalska, Doctoral Student, Department of Psychology, presented "Who Caused the Pain?: An fMRI investigation of Empathy and Theory of Mind in Children" at the Cognitive Neuroscience Society Meeting.
