The Center for Policy Practice
Student Comments On the Mentor Program
Initiated by Irving B. Harris in 1988, this unique program matches Harris School students in one-on-one relationships with leading policy professionals in order to "bridge the gap" between students' classroom experience and the practice they plan to enter after graduation. "My mentor provided an invaluable perspective through our conversations and the many people to whom she introduced me. Classes and professors teach you the concepts and theories, but experienced professionals think a little differently and can tell you how you will actually use them. When I came to Harris two years ago from another field, I knew very little about policy and policymakers other than what I read in the newspaper. These conversations connected the dots - I still have a lot to learn, but I understand so much more now. "

"The Mentor Program at the Harris School has been particularly helpful and meaningful to me. I am fortunate to be matched with a great mentor who's career trajectory is something I would be excited to emulate. Throughout the year we met at least once a term. While she has indeed provided professional support and connections, we have developed a personal relationship as well. This allows me to comfortably turn to her with questions about my career and what I can do to best position myself for it."
- David Marc Small, MPP'09
"This past year, I found the Mentor Program a great way to extend my network in Chicago. My mentor was an extremely valuable resource, especially when I needed an insider's perspective on organizations and potential employers. I have also realized persistence in communication may be required to successfully develop a relationship with a mentor. I know they are incredibly busy people, and that just comes with the territory."
- Meredith Sparks, MPP'09
"Last summer, I was anxious about whether my lack of concentration would hinder my networking efforts, or from fully utilizing the Mentor Program. Now I feel strongly that I gained just as much having taken a generalist approach to soaking in broad lessons from my accomplished mentor, who was a fantastic resource open to sharing all types of lessons learned in situations that all of us experience throughout our lives and careers. I highly recommended that all incoming students--regardless of concentration (or lack thereof)--apply to the program."
- Chad Williams, MPP Candidate 2010
