    Shortly before the Thanksgiving holiday, Chicago aldermen Willie B. Cochran and Toni Preckwinkle addressed the relationship between the University of Chicago and the surrounding community in a talk to Harris School students. The two aldermen agreed upon the need for the University to develop a stronger relationship with its surrounding communities. more >>

    Jim Warren, former managing editor of the Chicago Tribune, visited the Harris School on Tuesday, November 18, and discussed news media in the United States. Among the topics he touched upon: quickly changing trends, interactions with democracy and politics, and the threat posed to the traditional model of journalism by the recent reduction in print newspaper readership. more >>

    Charles Wheelan, senior lecturer at the Harris School, has been named to the Chicago Council on Global Affairs’ new Emerging Leaders Program. The eighteen people selected to this year’s class are local leaders in the fields of business, nonprofit, and government, as well as academia and medicine. more >>

    The Cultural Policy Center and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs hosted a symposium on November 10 about diversity in the arts and cultural organizations. The event—which follows the recent publication of the Center’s book, Entering Cultural Communities: Diversity and Change in the Nonprofit Arts—facilitated discussions among Chicago-area cultural leaders. more >>

    The Harris School, in association with the U.S. Consulate in Jedda, Saudi Arabia, hosted a post-election town hall style meeting on November 5, with panelists speaking in Chicago and via satellite from Jedda. The discussion focused on the impact of a new president on Middle Eastern policy, but also explored a wide range of issues, including religion, the financial crisis, and energy policy. more >>

    When London-native Madeleine Sumption, MPP’08 went home to visit, she noticed an influx of Polish immigrants starting in 2004—when Poland joined the European Union. For her honors thesis, Sumption looked towards home and studied this increase of Polish immigrants from 2004 to 2007 and their use of informal networks to find employment.   more >>

    Of the 80,000 to 100,000 unaccompanied children that come to the United States each year, only a small number are detained. But according to Maria Woltjen, director of the Immigrant Children's Advocacy Project at the University of Chicago, the numbers are rising from 8,000 in 2006 to an expected 10,000 next year. At last week's spring Dean's International Council meeting, Woltjen was one of three experts on immigrant and refugee children who discussed the enormous challenges these children face in the United States-both personally and with the immigration court system.   more >>

    Dr. Helen Caldicott, environment and anti-nuclear advocate and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, spoke at the Gleacher Center about the danger of nuclear power and its effects on the environment. Caldicott was named on of the most influential women of the 20th Century by the Smithsonian Institute, has written seven books, and won an Academy Award for her film, If You Love This Planet.
