- Last month Dean Karlan, MPP’97 returned to the Harris School to serve as the alumni speaker at the spring hooding ceremony. Back for the first time since his graduation, Karlan—a professor of economics at Yale University, founder and president of Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), and cofounder and president of StickK.com—took time before his talk to reflect on the unexpected experiences that altered his career path and where he has ended up.

- As CEO of The Habitat Company and an advisor to Senator Barack Obama's presidential campaign, Valerie Jarrett is among Chicago's professional elite. Last month Jarrett was a guest speaker for this year's Leadership in Chicago course, talking to students about her career and lessons learned.

- Of the 80,000 to 100,000 unaccompanied children that come to the United States each year, only a small number are detained. But according to Maria Woltjen, director of the Immigrant Children's Advocacy Project at the University of Chicago, the numbers are rising from 8,000 in 2006 to an expected 10,000 next year. At last week's spring Dean's International Council meeting, Woltjen was one of three experts on immigrant and refugee children who discussed the enormous challenges these children face in the United States-both personally and with the immigration court system.
