British MP visits the Harris School

November 18, 2010

Alistair Burt, a member of U.K. parliament and the parliamentary under secretary of state at the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office, stopped at the Harris School during his mid-November trip to the United States. Minister Burt is responsible for representing the U.K. in Northern Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and North America.

First elected to Parliament in 1983, Minister Burt came to Chicago as part of a tour of the consulates under his charge. He was joined at the Harris School by several members of the British Consulate in Chicago, as well as his personal staff. Mr. Burt was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in May 2010.

The intimate event included an informal discussion between Minister Burt and several Harris MPP students. Their conversation covered a wide range of topics, from comparing U.S. and U.K. electoral systems to issues regarding privacy, climate change, and counter-terrorism, which highlighted his experience in the Middle East.
