Philipson Speaks at the Milken Institute Global Conference 2008
Tomas Philipson, Daniel Levin Professor of Public Policy Studies, spoke on two panels focusing on health care at this year's Milken Institute Global Conference, held in Los Angeles in April.
The first panel, An Unhealthy America: Obesity and the Economic Implications of Chronic Disease, examined
the prevalence of obesity in the United States, factors contributing to higher obesity rates, and actions by public and private sectors that can reduce obesity among Americans. Among the reasons attributed for the increase in obesity,
Philipson discussed Americans' lifestyles, which are more sedentary than in the past. Read more about the panel
The second panel, Revolutionizing Health Care and Research in the Developing World, addressed the provision of health care to the world's poorest, particularly in Bangladesh and India. Philipson discussed
problems with delivery, which he said are more important than availability of technology. Read more about the panel and speakers, including 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus.
