In Memoriam: John Callaway
John Callaway, long-time Chicago journalist and a Harris School Visiting Committee member, passed away on June 23 in Racine, Wisconsin. He was 72 years old.
Callaway founded WTTW's Chicago Tonight in 1984 and served as program host for 15 years. He had a long relationship with the University of Chicago, including service on the Harris School's Visiting Committee starting in 1997. He moderated several panels at events hosted by the Cultural Policy Center, including a two-day conference on "The Future of Public Television" in 2004.
Callaway was the founding director of the University's William Benton Fellowships in Broadcast Journalism, which awarded 123 fellowships to broadcast journalists from 1983 to 1994. In 1997, he was presented with the William Benton Medal for Distinguished Public Service, honoring "the most extraordinary service to the field of education and to the University."
