The UChicago campus is located in Hyde Park just seven miles south of the downtown Chicago business district (the Loop). It can be reached easily by car, public transportation, taxi or shuttle. We also offer classes at 1871 in the Merchandise Mart.

Visiting Harris Public Policy

Harris Public Policy's main building is located on the UChicago campus. We also offer our part-time program in downtown Chicago at 1871 in the Merchandise Mart.

On the UChicago Campus

Harris Public Policy, 1155 East 60th Street, is located at the corner of 60th Street and Woodlawn Avenue.

Harris Public Policy @ 1817 is located in the Merchandise Mart directly north of the Chicago River between Wells and Orleans at 222 West Merchandise Mart Plaza #1212, Chicago, IL 60654.

The Merchandise Mart is a short walk from the Loop, West Loop, or River North.

The Mart is accessible by public transportation. Take either the Brown and Purple CTA lines or the #37 and #125 buses to the Mart. The #22 Clark and #156 LaSalle buses stop just a few blocks away.

Both Ogilvie and Union train stations are a 15 minute walk from the Mart.

Parking is available in nearby garages. There is also some limited metered street parking.

Public Transportation

By Train

Transportation from the Loop is available by Metra rail. Catch the Metra's commuter train at the Randolph, Van Buren, or Roosevelt stations. Get off at 57th or 59th Street and walk west to Woodlawn Avenue. Turn left and walk south to 60th Street.

By Bus

You may also reach the University by bus on the Chicago Transit Authority's #6 Jeffery Express, which can be boarded in the Loop on State Street. Get off at 57th or 59th Street, walk under the train tracks, and continue west to to Woodlawn Avenue. Turn left and walk south to 60th Street.

Taxi or Shuttle To/From the Airports

The two main cab companies in Chicago are Checker Cab and Yellow Cab, and you can hire one just by calling T-A-X-I-C-A-B, or 312.829.4222. A taxi ride to or from O'Hare Airport can range anywhere from $30 to $50 and a ride to or from Midway Airport can cost as much as $20. Taxi fare from Downtown Chicago to Hyde Park is about $18.

If you're scheduling a pick-up, make sure to tell them your name and the time you need to be picked up. It's also important to call half an hour before pickup time to make sure that there are no misunderstandings.

From Downtown Chicago

Take Lake Shore Drive south to the 53rd Street exit. Follow 53rd Street to Woodlawn Avenue. Turn left onto Woodlawn Avenue and follow to 60th Street.

From O’Hare Airport

Exit the airport at I-90/Kennedy Expressway/Chicago Loop. Head south past the downtown area until you see signs for Lake Shore Drive south. Take Lake Shore Drive south to the 53rd Street exit. Follow 53rd Street to Woodlawn Avenue. Turn left onto Woodlawn Avenue and follow to 60th Street.

From Midway Airport

Exit the airport by turning left onto Cicero. Turn right at 55th Street and proceed east on 55th Street, as it curves, into Washington Park. The road will fork; stay to the right and follow the road to the Midway Plaisance (59th-60th Streets). Continue east on 59th Street to Woodlawn Avenue. Turn right and follow to 60th Street.

From the North

Take I-94 south toward Chicago. Pass the downtown area and look for signs for Lake Shore Drive south. Take Lake Shore Drive south to the 53rd Street exit. Follow 53rd Street to Woodlawn Avenue. Turn left onto Woodlawn Avenue and follow to 60th Street.

From the South

Take I-94, the Dan Ryan Expressway, north to Garfield Boulevard (55th Street). Proceed east on 55th Street, as it curves, into Washington Park. The road will fork; stay to the right and follow the road to the Midway Plaisance (59th-60th Streets). Continue east on 59th Street to Woodlawn Avenue. Turn right and follow to 60th Street.

Parking on Campus

Harris Public Policy has a few parking meters immediately behind the building as well as a parking lot that requires an access pass. Contact the department you are visiting regarding the possibility of parking in the lot.

There is a free parking lot several blocks east at the corner of 60th Street and Stony Island. Although not guaranteed, there are usually open spaces.

In addition, street parking is an option, both in the blocks around Harris and along the Midway. During the school year, it is often more difficult to find a spot on the street.

How safe is it to take the train (CTA) or Metra?

Both options are convenient and fine to take. If you are visiting us on campus, Metra is definitely closer than taking the CTA (Red Line).
